Wellington, This day

The Labour Journal reports fewer applications for work at Auckland than usual, not many at Wellington, and the number steadily decreasing during the month at Christchureh. There was an average of ten applicants during the month at Dunedin, about the same number as in October ; 1568 men were employed by the Government on survey works, 978 by the Public Works Department, and 14 at the State farm. Judgment was reserved in the action of Sir Walter Buller to recover costs against the Public Trustee. The fishermen at Parapai'auraau made a haul of twenty-five sharks on one line, which had 450 hooks baited for schnapper. None of the sharks were less than six feet, and one was a tiger shark nearly eighteen feet long, which bit a piece out of the boat and made a great fight before being killed. The prevalence of sharks is attributed to the warm weather, and is a warning to bathers on the coast of the colony. Auckland, This day. The overdue Anglian has arrived. Her passengers are Mr Bax and two steerage. Christchubch, This day. Tne Mayors of Christchureh, St. Albans, Linwood, Sydenham, and Kaiapoi were installed yesterday. Dunedin, This day. Mr J. L. Martin has been presented with a gold medal, forwarded through the collector of customs, from the President of the United States, in recognition of the bravery he displayed in rescuing the crew of the American Ship Patrician.
