LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The Oddfellows meet this evening. Mr W. Y. Dennett will hold an auction sale at Mr A. C. Lewis' residence on Wednesday next. Messrs Beilby, Eeid, and Pattison arrived here by last evening's express after visiting the Palmerston show. Messrs Williams and Kettle hold a stock sale at Stortford Lodge on Tuesday next. At the Salvation Army to-morrow evening a public enrolment of recruits and a farewell address by Miss Parsons will take place. A match between the United " A " and the County Cricket Clubs is being played on the Heretaunga School grounds this afternoon. The young ladies of Miss Hodge's School are holding a picnic to-day in the direction of Havelock. A most enjoyable day is being spent. A big native palaver will be held in the Waipatu pah in March next for the purpose of discussing an important Maori question. The Govenor and the Premier have both been invited to attend. The body of the boy George Hartle, one of thc63 drowned by the capsizing of a boat in the Invercargill river on Saturday was recovered yesterday afternoon near where the boat sank. The lollies, especially the caramels, manufactured by Mr Mouldey of Heretaung Eoad are spoken of by those capable of judging as the best offered in the local market. Mr Mouldey's business with the storekeepers of the town and district is increasing daily, and there is no one deserves the success he has so well earned. Mr J. P. Thomson has just imported a rare collection of fancy goods suitable to the Christmas trade. His stock in this line consists of all manner of toys and articles suitable for presentation. Mr Thomson also introduces a new adhesive, which is highly spoken of for mending china, glassware, earthenware, and even cast-iron goods. At the Native Land Court this morning before Judge Butler Mr E. H. Williams applied for probate in the will of Here Eruka. Mr Scannell opposed the application on behalf of the children of the first wife. Judgmentwas reserved. Mr George libbett applied for confirmation of transfer of section 16, consideration £4OO. Mr A. L. D. Fraser supported the application and Mr Lewis opposed. The case will probably conclude on Monday. Yesterday a half-caste named Wi Mackay went down to Pakowhai where he met a Native named Pateriki Ngamotu over some horses. The result was that Macka.y first belabored the Native with his fist's and then laid hold of a rail with which he hammered his unfortunate victim until he was forced to desist by the onlookers. Ngamotu came at once to Hastings and laid an information with the police. He said he did not mind the encounter with fists but when it came to being pummelled with a rail he thought it high time to seek the protection of the law.

A most interesting lantern entertainment was given last evening at the schoolroom Clive in aid of the children's prize fund. Mr Bissell manipulated the machine, and some splendid views of England, Ireland, and Scotland were projected. Mr E. Bissell, junr., recited George K. Sims' beautiful poem " The Ticket of Leave Man," illustrated with appropriate scenes, and songs were rendered by Misses Bissell, M'Plierson, and Neagle. Miss M'Donald performed the duties of lecturess most capably, and kept a packed house thoroughly interested throughout. The prize fund profited substantially from the entertainment. At the conclusion Mr Bissell extended his well-known hospitality to a number of friends and visitors. The British Columbia Board of Trade has issued a circular for distribution throughout Australasia pointing out that duties averaging 35 per cent are collected upon all goods taken into Klondyke and Yukon goldfields districts unless they have been bought in Canada, hence the best place for miners and others to purchase their outfits and supplies is in the British Columbia coast cities. The circular is also intended to counteract the efforts of the United States Press to lead the public to believe that the Yukon goldfields are in Alaska, and not in Canada. Hundreds of persons have already been mislead by these misrepresentations, and have suffered heavy loss thereby, having in many cases been obliged to turn back after reaching the Yukon frontier on account of not being able to pay duties on their outfits.
