Attention is directed to Messrs Hannah and Co.'s change of advertisement. The H.B. Polo Club held a practice 011 the Stortford Lodge Ground this afternoon.
A conversazione was held at Napier last nigl.t to welcome the Bishop of Waiapu from England. A ciicket match played to-day on the Heietaunga School ground between the District School and the Heretaunga boys resulted in a one innings victory for the latter.
A meeting of the Magpie Minstrels will be held at 7.30 p.m. on Monday, at the schoolhouse. Those having music belonging to the Magpies are requested to bring it with them.
While the steamer Woolloomooloo was on the passage from Melbourne to London she was struck by an enormous tidal wave. Three seamen and one passenger were washed overboard and drowned.
There will be a magic lantern entertainment to-night at the Salvation Army Barracks ; and to-morrow night a lecture will be given on the " Miracles of Christ " illustrated by the magic lantern.
A trial was made in the Hastings Sale Rooms last night of acctyline gas, and those who attended were amazed at the powerful light given, To-night another display will be given when the new light will be compared with the ordinary coal gas.
An unfortunate woman was brought before Mr Turnbull, S.M., yesterday, charged with lunacy and on the certificate of Drs Tosswill and Linney she was committed to the Wellington Lunatic Asylum. She went south to-day in charge of Constable Butler.
There are sixteen lawyers in the new Victorian Legislative Assembly. The farmersand graziers are themost numerous class. They number eighteen. There are two doctors, and three journalists, five auctioneers, and eight " gentlemen." The following have been chosen to play in the bowling match Hastings v. Bluii Hill on Wednesday next on the local green :—No. 1 rink : Vickers, Tyerman, Thomson, Ellis; No. 2 rink: Reynolds, King,' Land, Clarke ; No. 8 rink : Mcllroy, Newman, Maddison, Haszard ; Emergencies : O'Rielly, Hodd, McLeod.
The annual meeting of the Heretaunga Cycling Club was held in Webster and Stewart's hotel last night. Mr Victor Roach occupied the chair. The balancesheet showed the club to be in an excellent financial position. The following officers and committee were elected for the ensuing year: President-, Captain Russell; vice-Presidents: Messrs A. L. D. Fraser, C. Hughes, T. Crosse, G. H. Roach, E. Newbigin ; Captain, Mr Moss, vice-Captain, Mr Home ; committee : Messrs McDonald, Elliott, Garnett, Watson, Sutherland, Roach, and Hyde. Arrangements are to be made for holding a sports meeting at an early date and fixtures for club runs are to be made.
A sort of highest record in long distance reciting has been achieved by an Italian professor who has repeated the whole of the Divine Comedy of Dante, from memory, in *a continuous sitting of 20 hours. He began at six o'clock one evening, and ended at two on the following afternoon. He was never once prompted, and did not make a single mistake. His audience, or those of them, at least, who were in at the death, ought to have taken the highest honours for endurance. At Balclutha yesterday Margaret Heney was charged with sly grog-selling at Balclutha on the 2nd inst. The chief witness was James Duncan, who was sent by the constable to get 2s worth of whiskey. He entered Heney's house, being watched by the constable, and returned to a house where the whiskey was consumed. The case was dismissed. A charge against John Heney w : as withdrawn, and a second charge against Mrs Heney adjourned.
In another column Mr E. Humphrey, the widely - known shoeing smith, of Heretaunga street, notifies that he has admitted Mr W. Graham into partnership. The business hitherto carried on by Mr Humphrey was thriving and substantial, and m order to meet his increasing trade he was latterly obliged to add considerably to the premises. Both members of the"new firm are capable and energetic, which points to a succesful elaboration. The King of Siam, if in other respects a monarch of no great pretensions owns a royal yacht that may fairly take rank beside the Standard or the Hohenzollern. The Maha-Chahkri was built at Leith in 1892, and resembles a cruiser rather than a pleasure craft. The King's quarters, all fitted with native woods and hung with the richest brocaded silk, are on the deck, and there is a gaily decoarted cabin for the Queen. Besides her ram, the Maha-Chahkri carries for offensive and defensive purposes several long range Armstrong, some Hotchkiss guns and a number of Nordenfeldts or Maxims on the flying deck.
