EIGHT HOURS SYSTEM TO BE APPLIED TO CIVIL SERVICE.
THE PUBLIC DEBT, £01,000,000.
{Per Press Association.—Copyriyht.)
Sydney, This day
In the Legislative Assembly Mr McGowen carried a motion in favor of extending the eight hours system to all Government employees, including the railway service.
The Right Hon. G. Eeid said if the principle was forced the Railway Commissioners would probably have to reduce the men's wages. He did not mind in what form the motion was carried as he believed in the principle and would endeavor as far as possible to apply its spirit throughout the service.
A motion by Mr Copeland in favor of a Bill making provision for opening of hotels on Sunday was carried.
A return laid on the table showed the Public debt at the end of June last to be over £61,000,000; against this the Government held securities and assets showing a credit balance of £7,000,000.
No provision is made in the Estimates for payment of the famous Butler extradition costs. It was understood at the time that the British Consul in San Francisco had paid the money, but latest advices from America show that so far as the San Francisco police are they have not participated in any disbursement.
