A Betting Case.
A FINE OF £5 IMPOSED. (Bit Telegeaph). Auckland, This day. The Police Court has frequently adjourned in the case of May, charged with betting at Ellerslie racecourse. The Crown Prosecutor amended the information and charged the defendant with having used a stand at Ellerslie to carry on betting. Counsel for the defence agteed to the amendment and pleaded guilty, He askpd fop a nominal penalty as it was a test case. Mr Tole did not think there should be only a nominal penalty. He argued that betting without stands was an infringement of the law, and the matter might receive ultimate decision in the Supreme Court. Mr Cottar, for the defence, replied that be would be prepared to argue the other way. Mr Brabant, S.M., iia&d defendant £5 and costs.
