♦ LOSS OF A COASTAL STEAMER. A TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE P.Y THOSE OX BOARD. ALL SAFELY LANDED. (Per Press Association. —L'ojiyriyht.) Sydney, Oct. 17. The coastal steamer Ivamerux is ashore at Pedro Beach. Mornya. No hopes are entertained of saving the vessel. Latest advices state that efforts are being made to laud the passengers and crew by ropes. This day. The Kamerux struck 150 yards from the shore on a rocky point at midnight. The night- was clear and starlight. After several attempts to get a line aboard Captain Sutherland, of Mornya, showing great bravery, plunged into the sea, but was washed back after a gallant straggle, in an unconscious condition. Eventually at daybreak a line was got ashore from the wreck. The passengers had spent a weary terror-stricken night, clinging about the decks which were frequently washed by the seas. Both the crew and the passengers, however, behaved splendidly, the ladies especially showing great coolness. As soon as communication was established a cradle was rigged and the passengers one by one were brought safely ashore. Hundreds were gathered on the beach giving assistance. When the vessel struck the shock ■was so severe that it threw many of the passengers out of their bunks, several being severely bruised. Captain Herse was pitched from the bridge and sustained severe injury to his head. He was uucouscious and was taken to the hospital. One account states that after all attempts failed to send a line ashore, pigs, of which the cargo partly consisted, were utilised, some of theanimals with a signal halliard made fast swimming to land. The vessel is full of water. She lies in a dangerous position and will probably break up. She is only partly insured. The passengers escaped with only what they stood up in.
