Mr John Charles Bigbain, Q.C., M.P. for Exchange (Liverpool), has been appointed to succeed the late Sir Lewis "William Cave as a Justice of the Queen's Bench.
The Court-martial to inquire into the recent grounding of the torpedo destroyers Thrasher and Lynx off the coast of Cornwall, when one of the Thrasher's steam pipes burst, killing lour stokers, has severely reprimanded the commander of the latter vessel. The commander of the Lynx was acquitted of blame. Archbishop Vaughan states that the converts to Rome in England number 700 per month. News has been received from West Africa that British forces have occupied several posts on the north-western frontier of the Lagos hinterland, and that the French forces are retreating to Boussa. Mr Sellar. a London merchant, has made a valuable present to the Corporamen of 200 Dutch, Italian, and English pictures. Oct. 16. Authority to establish a mint at Perth, West Australia, has been gazetted. Lord Londonderry wrote to the Northern Union of Conservatives' Association, which is sitting at Newcastle. attacking the injustice of the Right Hon. J. Chamberlain's Workmen's Compensation Bill, and complaining that the Conservative principles of a number of Conservatives disapproved of that gentleman's Radical home policies while admiring his Imperialism. The association re-elected Lord Londonderry president and endorsed his views. Hope was expressed that Sir Wilfred Laurier's policy would cement closer the commercial union cf the Empire. In the recent conflict between a sheriff's party and a body of unarmed strikers at Coleraine, Pennsylvania, among those shot down at the sheriff's orders were a number of Hungarians. The Austrian Government is now demanding a heavy indemnity on behalf of the relatives of the victims of the shooting. Romf., Oct. 16. The Pope has instituted an order under the title of the St. Ulphice Confraternity having for its object the conversion of England to Roman Catholicism. Ottawa, Oct. 16.
