LOCAL AND GENERAL.

"We acknowledge receipt of a large batch of Parliamentary papers. The usual monthly meeting of the Druids takes placetliis evening. A drunken person who created a disturbance iu Mr J. P. Thomson's drapery establishment on Saturday night will be called upon to defend his action at the S.M. Court at an early date. At the final meeting of the Floral Fete concert committee held in Mr H. H. Hunt's office last night the secretary, Mr G. W. "Wright, presented the balance sheet showing a net profit of .£l6 2s. Votes of thanks were accorded to Mrs A. Merewether and Mr G. W. Wright. The Taranaki Education Board has passed a resolution expressing sympathy with the Government's intention to place technical education in this colony on a satisfactory footing, and suggesting that when legislation initiating technical education is instituted special attention be given to the development of the dairy interest. Mr J. L. Le Breton, the touring manager of the St. John and Hayman's new Dramatic Company, arrived in Hastings last evening to make final arrangements for the Show week season. The company is headed by the talented and popular young Australian actress Mrs Harrie Mai'shall and the well-known favorite Mr Irve Hayman, and they are ably supported by Misses Dora Mostyn, M. Corcoran, Marie D'Alton, B. Wilmott, E. Clements, Vera Durrant, and Kittie Evelyn, and Messrs Bailey, Bruce, Field, Patey, Donoghue, Tola.no, and Franks. The opening production will be Messrs Pettitt and Sims' immensely successful drama "The Vagabond," and the changes will be rapid. Referring to the late Mr H. S. Fish in its editorial columns the Otago Daily Times says :—Shrewd and practical, when he joined the Good Templars, and thus severed connection with the associates and habits of half a life-time, he was prompt to see that the demands of the ultra-pro-liibitionists were impracticable, and from his dying bed he pathetically bade farewell to his lodge and reiterated his belief that in reasonableness and not in coercion lay the hope of the temperance movement. For many months he had been laid aside from public affairs with a painful and distressing affliction that surgioal art may have alleviated but could not cure. Those who knew his active and energetic temperament must have realised how painful it was to him to be cognisant of affairs in which his illness forbade that he should take a part. The memory of the sufferings of the last year should soften the most inveterate antipathy, and the community as a whole will regret that in Mr Fish's death it has prematurely lost one of its foremost wembers.

A shop in the Central Buildings is to let. A seven-roomed house is advertised to let. Tenders are invited for the erection of a six-roomed cottage. Awhareatthe back of the Exchange Buildings is advertised to let. The members of the Bisley term arrive in Wellington next week. Arrangements are being made to give them a suitable reception. The debate on Prohibition, which was to come off at the Oddfellows' Hall last night, was further postponed on account of the scanty attendance. £BOOO is mentioned as a fair recompense to the English cricket team for a series of five matches in New Zealand, the team costing the promoters £6O a day. The N.Z. Times has it 0:1 authority that Ben Tillett has been engaged as organising leader on Socialism for this colony at a salary of £4OO a year. At the S.M. Court, Wellington, on Friday last in the affiliation case Patterson v. Quinlivan the complainant's claim was dismissed. The suit has occupied the Court off and on for some months. The Wanaka is taking the first shipment of the season of New Zealand horses for the Indian market. Forty two were shipped at Christchurcli on Friday last. The animals are all good, useful sorts, and many of them are suitable for remounts. Even Nature did not omit celebrating the Diamond Jubilee. A short time ago part of the cliffs near Land's End gave way, and inspection showed that a roc-k had been shaped like the Queen's head without the crown or bonnet. The spothas been visited by a great number of photographers. It is claimed that the soil in the Thames and Waikato Valleys is admirably adapted for the cultivation of beetroot. It is estimated to produce from 15 to 20 tons of sugar beet to the acre, and this of the high average of 15 per cent, of saccharine. Eighteen months ago 534 settlers signed a bond agreeing to grow annually, for five years, 2991 acres of sugar beet, provided a syndicate erected the necessary machinery. It lias been ascertained that move damage was done to the Wellington Public Library buildings by last Tuesday night's earthquake than was at first supposed. On examination of the tower directly above the main 'entrance it was found that the brickwork in several of the angles of the octagon just below the dome of the tower is considerably shaken. Probably it will be necessary to take down a portion of it to prevent further damaged in the event of a repetition of the tremors. xV Wellington wire states that diver May informed the postal authorities that il would take at least a fortnight to remove the cargo to enable the Tasmania's mail room to be reached. In view of the contingencies—-weather and labor involved the Department thought the best course would be to blow up the deck and so release the cargo, but the purchasers of the wreck refused to allow this to be done and offered to make the salvage of the mails part of their own operations to be undertaken shortly if the Government would pay for the whole or any portion recovered, but this offer was not of a character the authorities could see tlicir way to accept. The recovery of the mails has not been definitely abandoned, but remains in abeyance. At the Catholic Church last night Father Patterson preached an eloquent sermon 011 the love of the Sacred Heart, and Father Smyth gave benediction, at which Rossi's Tantam Ergo was sung by Fathers Paterson and Power. This morning mass was celebrated at 6.30, and Father Patterson celebrated High Mass at 10 o'clock with Father Power (Waipawa) deacon and Father Ball sub-deacon. The choir under Mr Loughnnn sung the Keyrie, Gloria and credo from Bordese Mass and Vauglun's Sanctus and Agnus Dei, Mr Loughnan contributing Pro Poccatus from Rossini's Stabat Mater. Writes the London correspondent of the Lyttelton Times : —The cricket testimonal which the Sussex Daily News is getting up for Prince Ranjitsinhji, on his departure for Australia, is receiving additional support in consequence of the sympathy felt for the popular young Indian on account of the anxiety he is undergoing in connection with his personal affairs. His success in this country is complicated by a dispute as to bis succession in India. It seems that, according to Indian laws and custom, he ought not to have stayed so long - in England, and at present it appears possible that Prince Eanjitsinhji's devotion to English cricket will lose him practically the whole of his income. The young author is reported to be getting something like' .£2500 for his share in the book on cricket which is just out. But it comes as a blow to the sympathetic public that " Ilanji'' should be reduced to writing for a livelihood ! Eccles' Corn Paint quickly removes either hard or soft corns.
