Crawford, who was convicted last week of sending a threatening letter to a woman with whom he had been living and quarrelled with, admitted the charge and was sentenced to two years' probation. The New Zealand Rowing Association is to consider the scheme proposed by A. S. Biss for financing champion regattas. He is in favor of levying Is per head 011 all members of associated clubs; failing which the necessary amount to be raised by voluntary subscriptions from the rowing centres, to provide a piece of plate for each of the four principal events to be held by the winning club for one year, the cost to be provided by collecting money from supporters of rowing. The Government are being urged to grant licenses for cutting sleepers in connection with the Midland Railway contract, but in order to avoid any complications they will not come to a definite decision until the Cabinet have thoroughly considered the matter. It is not settled yet who will second the Address in Reply, but Mr Wilson, the member for the Wellington Suburbs, will probably be the mover. Claims have been served on the Wairarapa South County Council for £l5O expenses in connection with the licensing election with intimation that unless the amount is paid mandamus will be applied for. During the past season there were 4,606 tons of cheese agd 4,566 tons of butter produced in the colony, Wellington, Taranaki, and Otago being the principal manufacturers. Dunedin, This day. Messrs Murray, Roberts, and Co. are advised that the barque Ben Nevis, which put into Port Phillip for repairs, sailed for Dunedin on Saturday.
