SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIP.
THE ENGLISHMAN HOLDS THE BELT. (Per Press Association.—Copyright. London, Sept. 9. The match between Nuttall and Ernest Cavill for the championship of the world and £SOO aside was swum at Doncaster. The contest was witnessed by great crowds. Nuttall forged ahead from the start and at 300 yards, where Nuttall was leading by 2-5 yards, the Australian gave up, Nuttall finishing easily and beating the record for the distance. Time, 6min 88sec.
Ia the swimming contest Nuttall won the toss and selected the right hand side of the baths. He was quickest away and when 30 yards had been covered led Caviil by two yards. By the time the fourth length of the baths had been negotiated he had increased his advantage to six lengths, and kept steadily increasing until Cavill retired. Prior to the race the betting was 6 to 4 on Nuttall. Tyers and Percy Cavill have arranged to swim a mile between the piers at Blackpool on the iHth, five quarters-miles at Blackpool on the 22nd, and half a mile in the lake at Manchester or Hollingsworth before the 80th.
