«, EXCEPTIONALLY HEAVY WEATHER. (By Telegraph.) (Per Press Association.) Wellington, This day. Arrived, barque Grassmere, Captain Fletcher, from Liverpool, where she left on May Ist. Just prior to reaching the Cape of Good Hope she experienced heavy gales, which continued for about five weeks. Her decks were continually swept. Three seaman were washed overboard on one occassion but were secured by ropes and the next sea took them back on board. Several other narrow escapes are reported, showing the severity of the storm. The main braces had to be taken on the poop and the fore braces to the forward house, the crew being unable to stand on the main deck to haul them.
