Despite extraordinary precautions by the authorities, who had 100 police t specially detailed for duty, the annual Orange demonstration was again marked by disgraceful proceeding-:. The processionists were attacked at several points by organised bodies of roughs. Sticks, stones and other missies were freely used. The police were compelled to make several charges to beat off the assailants. Eleven arrests were made. There was a determined attempt to rescue the prisoners but the attackers fared badly at the hands of police. A number had to be treated at the hospital. Brisbane, This day. Obituary—The Rev. Isaac Harding, the oldest Wesleyan minister in Australia and formerly of New Zealand. Adelaide, This Day. The funeral of the lost explorers, Wells and .Jones, was the largest ever seen in the city. It is estimated that 50,000 people witnessed tho procession, which was over a miie long. The pall bearers were the members of the Calvert exploring expedition.
