Alleged Cruelty to a Child.
(B* Telegraph), (Per Tress Association.) Wellington, This day. A case of alleged cruelty to a child is occupying the attention of the Lower Court. John M. Healey, a clerk in the Land and Income Tax Department, and his wife, Margaret, are accused of aggravated assaults on their nephew, Albeit Green, an orphan, 12\ years, who, with two breihcrs, lives with iiiein. The boy deposed to being stripped and severely thrashed with a hide whip also starved aud that he bad to get food from the neighbors. He admitted various thefts and that he had been punished for burning kerosene rags and sticks in a room which he said he did to get light. Mr J. Hutcheson, M.H.R., said he had seen bad bruises on the boy and often saw him carrying extensive loads of wood. He had often given him food. He remonstrated with the Healeys, but both denied ill-using the boy and said he was hopelessly incorrigible. The case was adjourned till the afternoon to enable Mr .Jellicoe to conduct the prosecution in place of the police.
