The action of Steele v. the Bank of New Zealand, a claim for £6959, damages for an alleged breach of covenant in connection with a sheep run in Hawke's Bay, after a week's hearing, ended by the counsel for the plaintiff, in view of the evidence given, agreeing to a verdict for defendant without costs, which was entered b y the Judge. Wellington, This day. Francis Dillon, eldest son of H. D. Bell, Mayor, died last night of rheumatic fever. Mr Thos. Dwan, lecturing on the flax industry, stated that his recent visit to the United States and Canada proved to him that flax as compared with sisal and manilla was completely out of the running, and he was convinced it was better for New Zealand to destroy all the flax and use the ground for crops. Sergeant Major Ramsay, of the Wellington Police, has been transferred to Christchurch. He will be succeeded by Sergeant Major Mason of Christchurch. A Gazette published to-day contains a list of teachers holding certificates under the Education Act, 1877. Christchurch, This day. A shop and dwelling in St. Asaph street, owned and occupied by Thomas Reesigh, were destroyed by fire this morning. Insurances : £175 on the building and £4O on the stock.
