Telephone Charges.

A REDUCTION REFUSED. (By Tfxeurapii.) (Per Press Association.) "Wellington, This day. The Government in answer to the Chamber of Commerce have refused to reduce the telephone charges until the new rates have had a fair trial. In reply the Chamber points out that their contentions have not been touched. They insist that the whole capital cost lias been paid by the excess of revenue over actual expenses, and they particularly urge that the book-keeping is fallacious and would probably be severely dealt with by a Judge in the Bankruptcy Court. Ten per cent is charged for wear and tear, but instead of being credited to capital it is absorbed as revenue, consequently it is alleged that the capital account goes on. increasing, and the 10 per cent is charged each successive year on the 10 per cent of previous years, a process which, the Chamber points out, will ere long justify the raising of the subscription to £23 per annum. Under these circumstances no trial of the new rates can affect the question, and the chamber persists that they ought to be reduced rather than raised.
