H.B. WINTER MEETING

The first day of the H.B. Winter i meeting yesterday was in every way a successful gathering. Glorious weather, good racing and exciting finishes, was the order of the day. The attendance was large and representative. Hundreds of ladies graced the lawn, and the scene was a brilliant one. The chief event of the day—the H.B. Hurdle Race—brought every acceptor (13) to the post, and one of the finest races ever witnessed in Hawke's Bay was the result, Tally-ho winning after a great race with Ilex. The Ladies' Bracelet has always attracted more than ordinary interest, and yesterday's event was as popular as ever, and was won by Mrs Lowry's Belford. Captain Russell, in presenting the bracelet to Mrs Lowry, and the gold mounted whip to the rider of Belford, Mr R. Harley, made short appropriate speeches and called for cheers for Mrs Lowry and Mr Harley. The Diamond Jubilee Handicap fell to the Hon. J. D. Ormond's Martyrdom, who defeated eight others. The Maiden Steeplechase resulted in Rhino coming home alone ; Toreki, his only opponent, refused the sod wall early in the race and walked back to the paddock. The Hunt Club Steeplechase brought seven to the post and was won by Coastguard after a great race with Claymore. Greenstone accounted for the Trial Hurdles, in which Toreki and Slumber fell. The June Handicap brought eight horses before Mr Piper, and was won by The Artist after a ding-dong finish with Penrose. Mr Piper was, as usual, successful in sending the fields away. The City Band played a fine programme of selections. Mr it. Winsley supervised the lunch department, and it is generally agreed that a better table could not be obtained 011 any racecourse in the colony.
