SPORTING NEWS.

[By Giisy Grand.] Clieve and Much Ado passed through to Napier by Saturday's express. A jockey named Gardner was killed at the Kington iS.A.t races on May Ist, through Idiea falling with him in the Hurdle race. Tally-ho struck the hurdle in front of the stand this morning and fell. She exhibited signs of lameness when leaving the track and may be a non-starter at the Park. Mr Douglas has withdrawn all his horses from Auckland engagements. Handicappers have been a wee bit severe on Mr Douglas's horses of late, and until a better chance is given the squire of Te Mahanga the black jacket will be absent from the racecourse. A great point in favor of Mr Douglas is his action in withdrawing horses early from a race and thereby saving the public from taking long shots about his horses. Thirty-sis of the Wellington Park mares are in foal—l 4to St Leger, 10 to Hotchkiss, six to Castor, and live to Cuirassier. The pick of the yearlings is said to be a colt by St Leger from Frailty. The Park races start on Wednesday when seven events will come up for decicision. The Trial Hurdles will open the programme, and for this event I expect to see the numbers hoisted so—Gorse, Billy, St Anthony. The Electric should be won by The Shrew. Dromedary will probably account for the Steeplechase. The Welter should fall to Aphony. I look to The Shrew or Primula to win the Stewards'. The Plug looks a good thing for the Hurdles, and Forecast should get home in the Settlers'.
