SPORTING NEWS.

[By Gipsy Grand.] The A.J,C. lost £2,000 over the autumn meeting. Neither Daimio nor Norton finished in the Liverpool National. A jockey named O'Connor got his neck broken at the Dunkeld (Victoria) races a few days ago by his mount falling in a hurdle race. It is nearly time a hurdle was invented to prevent such accidents. A Chinese merchant in Wellington has decided to take to the turf and has purchased from Mr T. Shannon, v Spring Creek, two colts, rising two a Catsby—Wai (full brotner to Pio#erj and a Catsby—Spring Creek. It is said the price paid for the pair was .£IOO. With the proverbial Celestial luck the colts are certain to turn out a profitable investment. LIVERPOOL GRAND NATIONAL. THE RACE. The Liverpool Grand National Steeplechase, valued at £2,500, is again a race of the past*, and neither Norton nor Daimio finished in the first eight. The result of the race, as cabled some time ago, showed the Irish bred horse, Manifesto to be the. winner ; Filbert second and Ford of Fyne third. Twenty-eight horses started. Hickey was Norton's pilot, and Escott was up on Dahnio. At 330 the order to mount was given, and the : 28 horses filed on to the course in good time, the large field forming a splendid spectacle. The flag fell at the first attempt. Golden Cross was the first to break the line; but, on settling down, Timon made the running at a strong pace, clear of Barcahvhey, Manifesto, and Gauntlet. Then came Red Cross, Wild Man from Borneo, Norton and Westmeath, in front of Ford of Fyne, with Mediator lying last. At the third fence in the country the order was Timon and Barcalwliey, clear of Manifesto and Golden Cross, with Westmeath lying well up in front of the remainder, who were now forming a long tail. Coming to Valentine's Brook Barcalwliey ran up to Timon, and the pair were pursued by Golden Cross, the Soarer, Westmeath, andClawson, next to whom came Nelly Gray and the Continental," just in front of Manifesto, whose rider was taking a judicious pull on his horse. The pace continued a cracker, and hereabouts Wild Man from Borneo dropped out, and Ballyohara and Clawson were pulled up. On the racecourse the first time Timon came clear of Nelly Gray, Catlial, and Manifesto, the quartette being closely followed by Red Cross, Little Joe, with Norton now becoming prominent. At the fence before the stand Goldfish lost his balance. Timon jumped the water with a lead of 10 lengths of Nelly Gray and Catlial, who went on side by side, nicely clear of Westmeath, and Manifesto. Wild Man from Borneo, who went on as far as the water nearly last, blundered on to his knees upon landing, and was pulled up. Timon led the field the second time round with Norton making his way to the leaders. At the second fence the second time round Daimio was pulled up beaten, and the next obstacle brought Barc&lwhey down. At Valentine's Brook Manifest headed Timon, but the positions were immediately reversed when the racecourse was reached the second time, where Catlial was beaten and Norton pulled up. Timon fell two fences from home, but was re-mounted, and Catlial came down at the last obstacle, . where Manifesto was left with a strong lead of Filbert, who had made up some ground in the last half mile. Manifesto won by 20 lengths. Ford of Fyne came very fast as the finish; Prince Albert was fourth; Lotus Lily fifth ; and Timon sixth. Argonaut, who was tenth, was last to finish. Eighteen horses fell or were pulled up during the race. Three riders were knocked out. Time, 9inin 49sec. Manifesto started favorite at 6 to 1. Norton stood at 10 to 1, and Daimio 40 to 1.
