THE MURDERER BUTLER.
DESIRES TO ISSUE WRITS FOR CONTEMPT OF COURT. BUT THE CHIEF JUSTICE REFUSES THE ORDER. (Per Press Association. —Copyright.) Sydney, May 11. The Butler case has assumed a new phase. Council on behalf of Butler has applied to the Full Court for a rule nisi calling on the proprietors of two morning and two evening newspapers to show cause why writs of attachment should not be issued for contempt of Court for publishing on April 28th remarks, statements, and illustrations in reference to the murders with which Butler is charged. In his affidavit Butler submitted that the action of the papers was calculated to interfere with the course of justice and prejudice the public against him. Chief Justice Darley said anything calculated to interfere with the course of justice should not be published, but so much good sense and regard for the admiration of justice had been shown by the Press that he did not think he need make any order with regard to that. A rule was granted, subject to affidavit being filed, that the committal of Butler, which took place on April 27, be made returnable on Thursday.
