AUSTRALIAN NEWS.

GENERAL ITEMS. (Per Prm Association.—Qnpyritjht.) Sydney, This day. At the tennis tournament yesterday in the Ladies' Singles Handicap, Miss Dransfield (Sydney) defeated Miss Nunneley (New Zealand). The weather has turned extremely cold. Snow has fallen in several places on the high lands. This, added to the drought which still prevails in the interior, is causing great mortality in stock. The report of the commission appointed to Inquire into the firing of coal cargoes has been published. It shows that all cargoes which heated were loaded at high temperature and mostly in large ships which caused fires by spontaneous combustion and shifting of cargoes. The report states that the system of loading at present in vogue at Newcastle is antiquated and cannot be placed on a satisfactory footing until entirely reorganised. Several, other recommendations were made for improving loading and trirning.
