Accidents and Fatalities.
A girl named Violet Quarterman was brought to the Palmerston Hospital on Tuesday from Kiwitea suffering from a fracture of the shoulder caused by being thrown from her horse. Mr A. Marsh had his right hand caught in the cogs of a threshing machine at his farm, Egmont road, Taranaki, on Friday, and it was so badly mangled that it had to be amputated. A lad named Joseph Nicholls had a narrow escape from a serious accident in Masterton on Sunday. He was mounting a horse, when the animal started off and he was dragged head downwards, with his foot in the stirrup, for a considerable distance. He escaped with a sprained ankle and several cuts about the head. On Saturday last a very painful and serious accident befel Mr G. Goebel (says the Advocate) while engaged in building a straw stack at the threshing for Mr Newman. It appears that he was putting the finish on the stack when the straw began to give way under his feet. He, however, tried to obtain a firm footing with the assistance of a fork, but slipped and fell bodily on the tool, which penetrated his back and face. Medical aid was soon summoned and Mr Goebel is progressing favorably. Several lads were playing on the logs in the booms at Te Koporu (Kaipara), though they had just previously been warned not to do so, when one of them, Frank Herkt by name, felj in and was not seen to rise again till his body was found dead. Deceased tried to jump from one log to another and fell into the water, where he got under a log and was unable to rise. One lad tried to pull him out and fell in himself. A third, named Donald Johanson, jumped in and managed to save the second boy. The coroner's jury commended Donald Johanson for his courage in saving Fernandez, but blamed him for going on the logs after being warned off. Mr Herkt is unfortunate, as deceased was his eldest and brightest boy, and a few months ago he lost a daughter, who was burn! in her father's whare. Jf,
