[By Telegraph.] (Pt'r Pits* Association.) Dunedin, This day. A man named Nicholas Edwards was arrested last night at South Dunedin for a serious assault on R. M'Kinley. A cabman found M'Kinley lying on the street opposite Edwards's house, and on his being taken to the hospital it was found that he had a broken leg, tho small bones of one of his hands were broken, and he had a wound on the back of his head which was bleeding freely. On the police going to Edwards's house he said he knew what they wanted. When Edwards went home he found M'Kinley in his house, and after a scuffle he put him out on the road. M'Kinley is not considered to be in a critical condition. Later. Nicholas Edwards, arrested for the South Dunedin assualt case, has been remanded for a week. At an inquest on John Nicholis Brodie a verdict was returned that deceased poisoned himself while of unsound mind. A rider was added, that in the jury's opinion the chemist had failed to exercise sufficient care in giving laudanum. Gisborne, This day. At Waimate Valley this morning a man named Tom Gordon was found lying crushed by his horse. He was removed to the hospital. A Chinaman was killed by a fall of earth in his mining claim at Maori Creek (West Coast) last Tuesday. A co - operative workman named Francis had his right hand almost blown off through the unexpected explosion of a charge of dynamite, which he was using to remove a root in one of the drains being cut through the Ngaire Swamp. The multilated hand had subsequently to be amputated at the wrist.
