Government Life Insurance.
THE DEPARTMENT LIABLE FOR RATES. [By Telegraph.] (Per Press Association.) Auckland, This day. At the Assessment' Court Mr Brabant, S.M., upheld the entry in the valuation list in respect to the Government Life Insurance offices. He could see no reason why the Government Insurance Department should not pay rates on their'property the same way as any other Life Insurance Company. The State was in no way interested in the Insurance Department, further than that they guaranteed payment to policy holders. The profits were divided amongst the policy holders. Any rates they paid, therefore, did not affect the State, but merely decreased the sum to be divided. The Department were charged with postage and telegraph rates by the Government and though the Legislature had not directly stated they are not to pay rates yet, in certain enactments, it had put the Department on the same level with other Life Insurance Companies.
