At the sittiug of the Transvaal Raiil Inquiry Committee- Sir Charles Willoughby declined to state the substance of a private letter from the War Office. Mr Labouchere thereupon described the committee as a farce, and declared that it was hushing up everything. April 3. The claim made by the Transvaal Government in connection -with the Jameson raid includes &402,120 as compensation to the burghers who were " commandedto resist the raid. This is exclusive of £136,733 for other causes, and £1,(XX),000 for moral damages to the republic. At the Transvaal Raid Committee of Inquiry Sir Charles Willoughby (one of Dr Jameson's officers), gave evidence that he told the officers participating in the raid that neither the War Office, Imperial Government, nor Chartered Company would bother if the undertaking was successful.
