The Hastings Band will give a number of selections in the Main street on Saturday night. The Hastings and Napier bowlers are engaged this afternoon in a mutch on the local green. The home team seems to be in good form. The ltev. Dr Hosking leaves Hastings to take over his duties as pastor of the Hamilton Wesleyan Church on Friday week. His place will be taken by the Kev. W. 13. Martin, of Wanganui. Mr Charles Hughes, who is well-known as one of the foremost butchers in Hawke's Bay, has just bought a line lot of prime bullocks which turn out splendid beef. Mr Hughes is noted for the quality of his meat and the regularity with which he attends the wants of his customers. The marriage of Mr Taylor, of Okawa, to Miss Fullward, of Havelock, was celebrated at the Presbyterian Church. Havelock. to-day. The church was tilled with friends of the young people, who are very popular, as the numerous presents testified. Commenting upon Dr Hosking's remark aiscnt the Press and the infernal regionsj the Pahiatua "Herald says : '■ Surely this is not the doctrine taught by the Lowly Nazurene ! Was it not rather that we should have charity one towards another? A capital programme is announced for the half-yearly meeting of the Christian Endeavor Society which takes place tonight in the Wesleyan Church. Refreshments will be provided, and as the charge for admission is small there should be a large attendance. The Minister of Lands hopes to be able to resume his duties at the Government Buildings on Monday.
The s.s. Queen of the South, which was ashore at the month of the Manawatu River is again afloat. During the past month 1896 acres of Crown land were taken up, comprising five sections at Waikopiro, one at Norsewood, and one at Pohui. The Defence Department has notified Captain Stevenson and Lieutenants Hall and Bailey, of Woodville, that they have successfully passed their volunteer examinations. It is understood in Wellington that the reason there is to be no volunteer encampments at Easter is the fear of unsettled weather, but the Defence Department intends to hold one close to each of the four centres before the end of the year. A correspondent of the Taranaki Herald telegraphs from Kawhia that a large cave has been discovered at Wakanui, which will rival Waiotomo. The stalactites are very fine. Human remains were found in a hole some 20ft deep about three chains in. Shares in the Consolidated Goldfields Co. (Ziman's syndicate) were selling in London last nonth at prices ranging from £2 12s 6d to £2 16s 6d. At the same time Wailii shares were being sold at from £6 12s 6d to £6 17s 6d. Adolphus Bergin, of Auckland, is claiming a bonus for an improved method of dressing flax and utilising tow. He states that he has discovered a process for treating flax cheaply and expeditiously and claims that if the process is generally adopted there will be a revolution in the industry.
It is stated that a Government official will be selected to prepare an exhaustive report in connection with the scheme of the Minister of Mines for conserving water oil various goldfields.
At the Women's Council in Christchurch yesterday it was unanimously resolved that in all callings where men and women are engaged in the same worlc equal wage should be paid for equal work; a universal system of old age pensions was carried; and a vote of thanks passed to Sir John Hall for his efforts in obtaining the suffrage for woman. The time for receiving applications for the bonus for improved machinery for dressing flax expires to-day, but in deference to the wishes of a number of applicants, who say they have machines in course of preparation, the Government has decided to extend the time tilLthe end of the year.
In the Dunedin Chambers yesterday applications was made to sanction an agreement with John Batger for the purchase of all debts due to the Colonial Bank by the Hon J G. "Ward. Monday the sth prox., was fixed as the date for the examination of the Colonial Bank liquidators, on their offer in reference to the matter.
At the meeting of tlie Auckland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board some discussion took place on the question of the hours worked by nurses in the Auckland hospital. A motion that the medical superintendent furnish a report on a scheme for shortening the hours of labor was carried unanimously.
The police of Gisbornc have received information that a man named Alfred Wheeler has been missing since Thursday last. On that day Wheeler, who was employed at the Taruheni freezing, came to town for the purpose of voting at the licensing election and has not been seen since. He was 40 years of age.
A letter has been received from the Minister of Public "Works by Mr R. 11. Hunt, manager for the New Zealand Exploration Company (Limited), Auckland, in connection with the proposed PaeroaWailn railway, informing that gentleman that instructions were given some time ago for a survey to be made of the proposed line, but owing to some departmental transfers of officers there had been some delay in the matter. The Mimister intends being in the district in the course of a few weeks, when he hoped to see Mr Hunt on the subject. Wellington warehouse prices are in every instance charged by the D. I.
