H.B. Highland Society.
The monthly meeting of the Hawke's Bay Highland Society was held at St. Matthew's Hall last evening. There was a very large attendance, the hall being well filled by the members and visitors, many of whom came from considerable distances, including a strong contingent from Maraekakalio, Napier, and Petane. Owing to the absence of Chief K. D. 1"). M'Lean, M.H.R., the chair was occupied by Captain M'Allister. supported by exChieftain M'Kenzie and T. Parker, secretary. The minutes of the previous meeting having been read and confirmed and a new member elected, his proposer vouching that lie was a proper Highlander, wearing the kilts eij'erv his life while tending his ilo&p. Mr IL M'Lean eulogised the piemher, Mr Graham. The formal business being ended, the u social'' began, which consisted of songs, recitations, dances, <te. Pipe music for the Scotch dances was supplied by Pipers M'Kay, Stuart, Smith, and M'Phee ; while Miss Caulton (piano), Mr King (violin), and Mr Barrett (piccolo) played the quadrilles and other dances. The following was the programme carried out Song (Gaelic), Mr 11. M'Lean; Highland reel, Piper M'Kay ; dance, sailor's hornpipe. Master Stevens; song, •' Jessie's Dream," Miss Nicol: recitation, "The Cotter's Saturday Night," Mr T. Parker; and a recitation by Mr Fraser. Mr Campbell gave a Gaelic song, and Mr 1?. M'Gregor, formerly of the New South Wales Artillery, showed his expertness with the Indian clubs. These songs and recitations were interspersed with waltzes, quadrilles, and the country dances " Petronella," Flower's of Edinburgh,'' and winding up with the "Haymakers." The good tilings of this life were under the management of Mr "R. Kirkwood (cook) and Mesdames M'Leod and "Webster, and need we say they were very toothsome. We forgot to mention that the chairman and ex-chieftain were preceded to the hall by the pipers in full blast, where they were received by Mr I>. M'Leod, who wished them a Highland welcome. Altogether the meeting was a great success, and tfce thanks of the guests were orally given t<i Mr W. P. Stuart and the committee forlthe pleasant evening spent. '
