The Volunteer Fire Brigade meet this evening. " A Trip to Wonderland and Back," by The Saturated Pilgrim, will be found on our fourth page. The divorce suit of Davis v. Davis commenced at the Supreme Court, Napier, to-day. At the Druid's meeting last night there was a good attendance of members, including visitors from some of the outlying districts. A long list of bargains for sale by Messrs G. 11. Tickers and Co. will be found in another column. To-morrow afternoon Messrs G. H. Vickers will sell the whole of Mr J. Palmer's household furniture on the premises. Anjongst the lots is one beautiful rich tone piano by Stolli.. Messrs Kirkcaldie and Stains announce a fashionable exhibition of autumn and winter novelties. The stock will be displayed early next week, and visitors to Napier will do well to visit their establishment. A well-attended meeting of ladies and gentlemen was held in the Princess Theatre last evening to consider the formation of a new Operatic and Dramatic Society in Hastings. Mr Geo. Ellis was voted to the chair. The following officers were elected :—President, Capt. Russell: vice-Presidents : Messrs Fitzßoy, Fraser, Philson, and Maddison ; committee : Mrs Johnson, Miss Maddison, Messrsßidgway, Cashion, Thornton, Nortlie, Roache.Tyermaii, and Merewether ; conductor, Mr H. H. Hunt; secretary, Mr A. llyan. It was resolved to produce an opera during the June race week. It was also decided to hold a social and dance on Friday 19th inst. Over 40 members handed in their names. The subscription was fixed at 7s 6d for gentlemen and 2s fid for ladies for the year. The usual monthly meeting of the Hastings School Committee was held last evening in the schoolroom, there being present—Messrs Maddison (in the chair), George, Morgan, Goldsmith, M'Quillan, Tong, and F. Cook (secretary). The headmaster reported that the school was working at a great disadvantage owing to the non-arrival of the two teachers from the Normal School, Christcliurch, who are to take the second master's place. He also wrote that there were several vacancies for trainees, as there would be vacancies for pupil teachers during the year, A cheque for the quarter's stationery fees, Is, was enclosed. It was stated that the infant school would be opened next week. A letter was read from Miss Newton, tendering her resignation as second mistress, after ten years in the position, which was accepted with regret, and Miss A. Disher recommended for the position. An application was received from Mrs Anderson for the position of caretaker, but it was decided to invite applications for the position at £l6 per annum. It was resolved to erect a shelter-shed on the ground, the cost not to exceed £1 '2. Mr Fitzßoy was nominated by the committee to (ill the extraordinary vacancy on the Education Board. After passing accounts to the amount of X'l l'Js oil for payment, the meeting adjourned. A telephone exchange was opened at Gisborne yesterday. Probate hns been granted in the estate of the late Mr Tinline, of Amuri. the amount being sworn at under X'Bo,ooo. At Blenheim on Monday evening the vibration caused by an earthquake set the town clock chiming. At the Gisborne Supreme Court yesterday Friend Horatio Sawyer was sentenced 'to a year's imprisonment on each of three charges of false pretences, the sentences to be concurrent, and prisoner was ordered to pay the costs of tin- prosecution and the p< ople he had defrauded. Wheat growing has been resumed in the Pambula district of New South Wales after a lapse of -10 years, when it was abandoned owing to rust. The Hawera police have taken possession of a six toed and fingered boy on the ground that not being of age it is not lawful to exhibit him, ami sent him home to his parents. The Bunedin University Council yesterday resolved !o appoint Mr F. 1!. Stevens, at present in the Transvaal, as metallurgical lecturer and surveyor at the School of Mines. Hotel and shop-keepers should note that the day of elections for licensing Committees is a statutory half-holiday. Between the hours of 12 noon and 7 o'clock in the evening on that day it is also unlawful to sell intoxicating liquors in any licensed premises. The Invercargill Garrison Band has decided to accept an offer of £'so towards <lhe expense of going to Melbourne at Faster to take part in the band contest at the Druids' gala. The offer was made by Mr Brennan, general secretary of the Order. Some valuable Maori carvingsof antique type have lately been purchased for the Auckland Museum, including a fine carved doorway from the Bast Cape district (formerly the entrance to a runanga house), a large verandah carving in totara, a carved post supporting a ridgepole, a figurehead of a fishing canoe, heitikis, greenstone ornaments, and other articles. The late Mr L. Ehrenfried, of Auckland, bequeathed .£IOOO for charitable purposes ; JSSOO is for distressed Jews in the Auckland province and £'soo for charitable institutions at Auckland and the Thames. Employees in the service of the firm for over five years have not been forgotten in the will. The deceased's funeral yesterday was attended by 800 persons. Last week the carcases of seven or eight lambs out of a draft of some 250 had to be rejected at the Belfast Freezing Works on account of the injury caused by the penetration of the seeds of barley grass. The seeds had worked their way through the skin and were embedded from half to three-quarters of an inch in the flesh, principally about the shoulders, briskets and inside of the thighs. The pelts were, of course, ruined, and presented the appearance of having been riddled with shot. Wellington warehouse prices are in every instance charged by the I>. I.
