Before the House of Commons Committee, Mr Cecil Rhodes, replying to questions, said he had expected the Rand agitation to result in a bloodless revolution, perhaps a refusal to pay taxes. It had been decided previous to April that a constitutional movement would have no chauce of success. He obtained the strip of territory in Bechunaland for the purpose of railway construction, and likewise to soeuiv hind at Pitrani for a police camp in the event of it being required.
