In the Presbyterian Church to-morrow evening, the discourse will be specially addressed to young men, the subject being " Heroes of the Faith—the Waldenses. An assistant mistress is wanted for the Port Ahuriri school. Salary, about .£lOl per annum. Applications will be received till March 11.

The train timed to leave Napier to-night at 10 o'clock will be delayed till 11 o'clock, to allow visitors to see the George Darrell Company. The next meeting of the Hawke's Bay Highland Society, Mr R. D. D. M'Lean, M.H.R., chief, will be held at St. Matthew's schoolroom, Hastings, on Friday, March 5.

It is reported that Mr Lucas, of the Miners' Union, Thames, will probably be the new Mining Inspector, vice Mr Gow. There is considerable dissatisfaction at the action of the Government in stopping prospecting in the Urewera country. Messrs Laing and Cruickshank, London, are offering a reward, through their attorney, of £IOO for payable reefs. They floated Rhodesia for Mr Cecil Rhodes, and are considered reliable by mining men here.

There has been a considerable revival in mining in the Thames district. The Thames-Hanraki deep level shaft lias been sunk and timber centered to a depth of 400 ft. Mr Hughes, an English engineer, has arrived to take charge. On being interviewed he expressed the opinion that gold exists at the deep levels. He has had considerable experience in deep-level mining in Nevada. The value of imports at the port of Poverty Bay during the quarter ended December 31st was £8592, as compared with £'8365 for the corresponding quarter of 1895. The value of imports at the port for 1898 was £23,375, against £•23,170 for the previous year, The exports for 1896 were £317,872, and for 1895 £136,539.

At a meeting of the Dunedin Furniture Trades Union last night it was decided to accept the decision of the Board of Conciliation in the recent dispute. The Union passed a resolution that the Board had cut down the prices paid and reduced the standard of living, and therefore, in consideration of vital points conceded, the Union trusts the decision of the Board will be put into operation at once, and the clause relating to apprentices strictly adhered to.

During the duel on horseback in the second act of " Called to Arms " between Messrs Woods and Dalgleish last night says the N.Z. Times a painful accident happened to Mr Woods. Mr Dalgleish, in striking at Mr Woods, hit rather high, and the sword slipping, thfrpoint ran into Mr Woods' forehead, inflicting a deep wound. The audience did not know that the duel was such a realistic one and that the hero had been injured until he appeared in the next act with his head covered with sticking plaster. The leech slug has (says the Manawatu Farmer) been very destructive to fruit trees in the district during the present season. The fellowing remedies are recommended :—Dry slack lime dusted over hedges ; isolated trees, helebore powder ; or if neither of these are handy, dry earth or cool dry ashes. The Government recipe is :—tilbs sulphate of copper dissolved in four quarts of hot water, 4oz Paris green, ■lo'/. helebore powder (it is a deadly poison) in two quarts of water, mix Paris green to a paste, slake the lime, add 4gal water and strain, then add to sulphate of copper, and make up to 50 gal, with water and spray.

A trial of the Government scheme for establishing workmen's homes will shortly be made in the vicinity of Mosgiel. Mr F. Tregear, of the Labor Department, Wellington, has paid some visits to the Taieri, and has inspected land from Wingatui right down to the south of Allanton, and the Taieri Advocate says that a hundred families will shortly be settled in the neighborhood. The object of tho scheme is to afford mechanics ill Dunedin encouragement and opportunities to live, in the country. The land will be cut into acre allotments, and, where necessary, assistance to the amount of X"2O will be given to those who require assistance in putting up small cottages. Workmen's trains at nominal fares will be run, and every facility afforded to workmen to leave the overcrowded localities in which they reside in l>unedin, in order that they may live in the mure healthy surroundings of tho country. The land nil! be leaned on the lease in perpetuity system at rental of 4 per cent on its capital value.

The man Kenneth Bayne, seriously stubbed some two months ago at Te liuiti, is progressing towards recovery. He is a well-known New Zealand athlete. A. 0. Field was committed for trial yesterday at W liitianga on a first charge of embezzlement from the Kauri Timber Company.
