Whakawatea, carrying Sst 51b," was among the •' also stated." There was an error in the cable message which gave Quiver as tho winner of the Viceroy Cup. The daughter of Trenton did not start in the race. On the strength of the cable a Melbourne backer hauled a good sum from a bookmaker and started on a trip to the Old Country next day. The bookie's bottom lip must have dropped somewhere about his fetlocks when the bloomer was discovered. At the inquest yesterday 011 Castleton, the jockey killed at Takapuna races, a verdict of death from fracture of the skull was returned. The Sportsman (England) says that Newhaven and Quiver have been nominated for the Grand Prix de Baden. The Canterbury Summer meeting is set down for to-morrow. My anticipations are as follows :—Welter —Bimetallist and Montacute; Middle Park—Stead's selected. Midsummer—Misfire or Musketry. Craven —Belligerent and Barmby. Interval — Grand Cross or Remorse.
