The Paeroa Outrage.
THE POLICE UNABLE TO TRACE CARROLL. [By Telegraph] (Pfc P/vss Association.) Wellington, -Jan. 24. There seems now but little doubt that Carroll, who threw sulphuric acid at Paeroa, came here and was successful iu eluding the vigilance of the police. During the voyage from Manukau in the Mahinapua he admitted to the purser of the vessel that he intended to proceed to Sydney. The Mararoa left for Sydney at 7.30 last night but was searched, no trace of the fugitive being found. Carroll's luggage was on the Mahinapua and this has been taken charge of by the police. Carroll evidently had the hint that the police were on his track and never called for his things, but whether he left for Sydney or net is a matter of speculation. January 25. The police have been informed that Carroll expressed his intention, before he left Auckland, to commit suicide. It is supposed that he may have jumped overboar:! from the Mahinapua.
