The murdered book-keeper Brady s fiancee states that he told her on the day of the murder that he. had arranged to meet Phillips (who is now under arrest) at the shop at night to receive a portion of the money alleged to have been embezzeled by the latter. Brady having agreed not to prosecute if the amount was refunded. It is suggested that the money was not forthcoming and the crime was the outcome of Brady's threats to press a prosecution.
