FEDERAL DEFENCE.
CABLES.
(IV, Mi-:r.... • i:vk. Th.is day. Although great >.e-.-rt cy is maintaimd over the recent Commandants' Conference, some of the recommendations have been allowed to transpire. As the fortifications on Thursday Island and King George's Sound are federal works, it was suggested that it would be an additional guarantee of security if the works were regularly inspected by some of the officers specially chosi n by the several colonies which contribute to the cost. it was also iv d that the services of engineer officers, at a salary of LiOOO p:T iinnum. be secured on behalf of all the colonic.! to advise on matters relating to fortifications, submarine mining, end electric lighting. It was suggested that there should be extensive armaments on Thursday Island, and garrisons at Roebuck Bay and Port Darwin. It is probable that the co-operation of the Admiralty will bo invited on this subject, as it may be neces-ary to protect the cable in vicinitv of the land.
