The Coming Elections.
Greytown North, Nov. 29
Mr Coleman Phillips addressed a large audience here last night. Though his nomination was refused he intends to continue his candidature. He had been away and tendered his nomination on the 26th. The returning officer had advertised that the list would close on the 25th, but Mr Phillips maintains that the .statutory day was the 27th under the Electoral Amendment Act, 1K96. He threatens to upset the election. A unanimous vote of thanks was given to him. Wellington, Nov. 29. Mr John Duthie has retired from the contest for the City. Nelson, Nov. 29. Mr Piper, Oppositionist candidate for Nelson, specially invited a meeting of ladies on Saturday afternoon, when he delivered a brief address, and Mr Duthie, of Wellington, spoke at length in opposition to the Ministerial nominee. Messrs Cock and Sclanders also addressed the meeting. On Saturday Mr Duthie addressed a crowded meeting at the Theatre, when he received a flattering reception and much applause. In the course of his speech he said he was nonii:. > ! At its conclusion Mr Sclanders moved a hearty vote of thanks and of regret that Mr Duthie would not be a candidate for Parliament, and this was declared carried. Hokitika, Nov. 29. Mr Grimmond addressed his first meeting to a crowded audience in the ffotara" Hall, Ross, last night, the Mayor in the chair, and met with an enthusiastic reception. He spoke strongly in Opposition to the Government and Premier, especially condemning the corruption of the present Administration. At the conclusion he received a unanimous vote of thanks and confidence. Timuu;, Nov. 29. Mr Maleom M'Leod has also been nominated for Geraldine. Dcnedin, Nov. 28. The Premier last nighi received a congratulatory address from the Worker's Franchise League. He left for Lyttelton this morning, where he speaks to-night. Next week he delivers addresses in various parts of the Hawera and Egmont electorates. Invercargti.l, Nov. 28. Messrs J. G. Ward, C. Cowan, and A Beaven have been nominated for Awarua.
