A rumor to the effect that there was a disturbance at Captain Kussell's meeting at Te Aute is contradicted. After the meeting dissolved there was a row between two men over some personal matter, and this is the only ground for the report. At the Prohibition meeting last night Dr Hosking said the Prohibition party in Hastings were pledged to neither of the candidates for Hawke's Bay, as their Prohibition principles were almost similar, and each Prohibitionist in voting should be guided by their consciences. Asked at his Clyde quay meeting last night "Are you a Christian Mr Charles Wilson, the Liberal candidate, replied : " I hope 1 am, but I don't know what I shall be by this time next week." Housewives may take a wrinkle from Captain Joshua Slocum, who is singlehanded navigating the Spray round the world. His provisions include a good supply of eggs, and he treats himself occasionally to eggs and bacon. Captain Slocum told a Sydney interviewer that lie knows the best way in the world to keep eggs. It is to dip tlieni in boiling water for the space of one minute. This partial cooking serves to close up the pores of the shell, and the eggs, hermetically sealed, will keep for months. Amongst the " Births " in a recent issue of the London Times was one to which was added in small type; "This notice was inserted among the ' Deaths ' of our issue of October 5." It reminds the St. James' Gazette of the story of the old high-flying days of journalistic infallibility. An indignant man presented himself at the office of a journal which had that morning announced his death. The never admits contradictions of its own news : it is against our rule. But I tell you what we'll do ; we'll put you among the ' Births ' to.morrow, and give you a fresh start." A case of mistaken identity, in which W. "Whittaker, a local jockey, was the victim, took place at the Palamerston railway station yesterday on the arrival of the express train from AVellington. It appears that a fellow passenger could not account for 10s which lie imagined be had in his possession the previous niglit, and thinking that lie had been " gone through " for the amount informed the constables on the railway platform of what had happened, and at the same time pointed out Whittaker as the one who may have had the supposed missing half-sov. On this paltry information, which was not or could not be eorroberated. Whittaker was arrested. Now, the injurious part of the the affair is this : The report of Whittaker s arrest will travel all over the colony, but fifty chances to one if the subsequent facts will follow. We have made enquiries and find that there is not the slightest reason to believe that Whittaker is in any way implicated in the a flair.
