[By Telegraph] (Per Press Association.) Christchurch, This day. The cricket match Australia v. New Zealand was commenced at 12.5 p.m. in Lancaster Park. The weather was fine, and there was a fair attendance. Cuff was elected captain of the New Zealand team. Trott, who won the toss elected to bat first, sending in Iredale and Darling to the bowling of Uphain and Robertson. Runs came freely from the start, and 20 were nosted after ten minutes play. With his score at 10 Darling was missed at deep square leg by Ridley, and off Upham's same over Mills missed him at long on. The runs still came free until 43 had been scored when Pearce took the ball from Upham and in his second over the new bowler got Darling caught at long field on. Giffen filled the vacancy, and the scoring became slower. The fielding which had been patchy showed improvement. With 60 up Neill went on rive Robertson. At 77 Upham resumed bowling in place of Pearce, but at lunch the score stood: — Iredale, not out ... ... ... 40 Darling, c Mills, b Pearce ... 29 Giffen, not out 16 Extras 1 Total for 1 wkt ... 86
