The police subsequently arrested Macfarlane and charged him with arson and making a false declaration. He was remanded for a week. John Sheen, licensee of the Taranganui Hotel, formerly a well-known commercial traveller, fell from the balcony whilst extinguishing the hotel lamp this morning, and sustained a compound fracture of the log, which had to be amputated.
