LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Mr A. L. 1). Fraser was to-day nominated for the IJawke's JJay sent. Mr J. X. Williams was elected Chairman of the Ilawke's Bay County Council to-day. There is no truth in the statement ihat Mr Corn ford will address the electors at Hastings to-morow. Seats will bo reserved for the use of Indies at Mr A. L. I>. Fras.r's m.-eting in the I'rincess Theatre on Thursday evening. The Mayoral election now proceeding has not aroused any particular enthusiasm amongst the ratepayers of Hastings. This is probably due to the wider issues involved m the battle royal between Captain linssell and Mr Fraser having spoilt the public interest in the municipal contest. Tenders are being invited in the colony for the lirst half of the million loan authorised last session, particulars of which will be found in another column. The price is fixed at ibj percent. In view of the plethora of money for investment at present, it is anticipated there will be no difficulty in obtaining the amount required. Tenders are limited to the colony. Walking over Niagara Falls on a wire being a dead sensation, a young man lias decided to do something more exciting and hazardous. A wire is to be stretched from shore to shore, and he proposes to cross it on a bicycle. As even this might not be dangerous enough, the cyclist has determined to undertake the journey at midnight, and the wire is to be illuminated by electricity. The man will wear on his head a circle of incandescent flames, to liglii which the current will be made to pass by means of the steel wheels and a wire to the lamps.—Next, please! A youth named Farland, employed by Messrs Erenstrom and Andrews, bakers, was killed on Saturday evening on the Hangatikci Line. Deceased was riding in company with two other lads when his horse, placing its foot in a hole, fell, throwing Farland, and then rolled on him, killing him instantaneously. The body was taken to the Travellers' Eest Hotel, where an inquest will be held to-day. His parents, who reside in Palmerston, have lost two other of their children within a recent period, and much sympathy is expressed for them in their sudden affliction.

A story lias reached London from America which (writes the correspondent of the Argus), for the sake of humanity, it may be hoped is untrue, and which, at any rate, at present lacks confirmation. It is only referred to beeause it is alleged that the two miscreants concerned, Hiram Good and Sandy Young, have gone to Australia to avoid the consequences of the cruelty attributed to them. These men, trappers by trade, had a grudge against the Mill Creek tribe of Indians because they believed they had murdered Good's wife. They followed them to be revenged, and tracked the tribe—'2o2 men and women—in August last into a natural basin surrounded by walls of rock, and only entered by the bed of a narrow stream. Blocking up this entrance with rocks, and waiting until the Indians were disabled by a drunken debauch, Good and Young shot at the wretched creatures until all were killed, except a child of six, which they took with them to San Francisco. This feat quite eclipses the revengeful exploits attributed by Feniniore Cooper and other American novelists to the early backwoodsmen,

Mr J. T. M. Hornsby lias a ladies' committee one hundred strong working for him in Carterton. Anti-toxin serum cured 970 out of 1100 patients treated for diphtheria in the last twelve months at the Vienna Institute. Probasco has had bad luck. At Christchurch he tripped over a rope in the dressing tent on Saturday neight and broke his arm —for the third time. The "Wellington correspondent of the N.Z. Herald says that another effort will be made to induce Mr Duthie to come forward, even at the eleventh hour. Claims by old soldiers and volunteers for New Zealand grants must be sent to Government Buildings, \\ ellmgton, on or before the 'soth of the present month. Raw carrots are recommended in cases of consumption on the ground that the succenic acid which they contain is said to be deadly to tuberculous microbes. Mr Manisty addressing a meeting in Mangatainoka tefused to pledge his allegiance to Seddon, Stout, or KusseU on the grounds that there was no certainty that any one of the three would be returned to the next Parliament. The unanimity with which the Australian Governments are following in the wake of the Seddon Minis-try with Liberal legislation furnishes a good answer to those critics who glibly denounce the policy of the present Government as wildly experimental. —Auckland Star. Out of a population of 708,360 people Nov/ Zealand lias 13,.357 foreign subjects, and this number includes men and women from almost every known quarter of the globe. The number of foreigners resident in the colony has decreased considerably since 1891, when the figures stood at 14.404. Messrs Stringer and Atkinson announce this as the opening night of their American Steam Riding Gallery. The horses in this particular machine are superior to the common or garden steed of the ordinary or back yard'merry-go-round, in as much as the motion resembles the galloping of the real live article, which lends an enchantment and exhi'.oration to the ride that is unknown to the patrons of the one usually in Vogue.

A returned Omaru visitor to Southland informs the North Otago Times that a ludv in that part of the Island has singularly distinguished herself. She is sixty vears of age, and rides a bicycle. She has recently ridden a hundred miles in a <lav, ami altogether reckons that she has covered 5000 miles since she has became possessed of a " bike." She is the mother of "21 chilrtn-n. four of them having been born within sixteen months. No other la-lv cvclist in New Zealand] can show a record like this—sve, of course mean like the first part. Tennyson could hike a worthless sheet of paper, write a poem on it. and make it worth L 13.000, that's genius. Vauderbilt can write a few words on a bit of paper and make it worth 1,155,000 —that's capital. The United States can take an ounce and a quarter of gold and stamp upon it an eagle and make it worth Ls— money. A mechanic can take material worth LI and make it into watch springs worth 1/200 —that's skill. A merchant can take an article worth 3s and sell it for 4s—that's business. A lady can purchase a B.s hat, but prefers one that costs L5 —that's foolishness. A ditch digger works ten hours a day and handles several tons of earth for 7s —that's labour.

There were a great many accidents at the last Sydney League of Wheelman Meeting. According to one writer the list commenced in the first heat of the League Cup when W. Lyons fell and broke his collar-bone. In the Orient Plate six came to grief, and Middleton whoso left arm came in contract with the fence, was carried away on a stretcher. In another event four men toppled over without hurting themselves, and in the last race of the di.'.v nine competitors came down with a terrible crash, and Ruthgen was thrown clean over the fence, but, wonderful to relate, no bones were broken. The machines. however, were twisted about like thin wire. The smashes in at least two instances could be traced to faulty steering by inexperienced riders.
