A Clever Show.
Wherever Mr Charles Cooper his given his grand national and patriotic scenic entertainment in this colony they have been well spoken of by the Press and public alike. In Auckland Lord Glasgow was delighted with the entertainment, and in a letter to the Mayor said : " Will you be so good as to express the thanks of Lady Glasgow and myself for the enjoyment we experienced." Oil Thursday evening ' next Hastings will have an opportunity of witnessing perhaps the brightest display ever put. upon the local stage. Mr Cooper will be assisted by Mr W. Mackenzie, Miss Jessie Glover, and some of our best amateur talent. Some of the scenes are said to be strikingly realistic, and are shown up with the aid of the finest and latest improved triunial stereoptican." Referring to the entertainment in Wellinnton, the following is from the Times report : —" The story of England's greatness—the growth of her navy and army—was the subject of Mr Cooper's National Scenic Concert at the Opera House last night. The story was illustrated by the finest set of pictures of a similar character ever shown in Wellington. A very fine representation of the Battle of Trafalgar was followed by a highly realistic picture showing the sinking of one of the enemy's battleships by the Victory. First came the flashes of the guns, then crash went a mast—an explosion followed, enveloping the ship in flames. The mechanical effects in this scene were undoubtedly very clever." In Auckland the Star said :—" Last evening the City Hall was crowded to excess to witness the entertainment • The Land of the Moa.' The crowd from the city was so great that the North Shore visitors were unable to obtain admission, and money was refused at the doors. The scenic effects were choice both in coloring and detail, illustrative of the, 'early days of colonisation; the realistic burning of an emigrant ship at sea and rescue of the passengers and crew, with limelight effects ; the scenes of the battlefields of New Zealand, and the burning of the rebel pahs, &c. The whole exhibition was a tremendous success." It is said that nothing so good has been seen in Hawke's Bay. The box plan is now open at Hunt's, and reserved seats should b$ secured at.oace.
