Mr John Morley speaking at Glasgow, admitted that the activity of secret societies in Ireland was increasing and that discontent would increase until the country was granted autonomy. A German expedition in New Guinea discovered a navigable river near Bismarck running through populated plains for 200 miles. Shanghai Nov. 9. The real cause of the punishment of Li Hung Chang is said to be the proposing that the European ceremony be adopted in saluting the Emperor.
