TRAINING NOTES. (By Tkleghaph.) [Special to Standard.] Ciiristchckch, This day. It was very boisterous and cold, and a number of horses were not stripped this morning. Quiltiri was first out, and he traversed two miles strong alone. None of the other Cup horses did very strong work, but Fabidist, Bom Pom, Yoltigeur. Defiance, and Saracen were worked before breakfast, and the latter was sent with Bizarre over seven furlongs
fa st ] Lord Roslyn was not out. He was found to have burst one of his feet during a gallop yesterday, which put him out of the Cup and perhaps all his other engagements at the meeting. He is to be put into physic at once. King's Bowman, who arrived yesterday, cantered. He looks well.
Skirmisher and St. Laura brushed along separately over a few furlongs. Dauntless, Solitaire, and Daredevil ran along fast over four furlongs, as also did Sir Launcelot and Bold. The work after breakfast was not very important.

V.R.C, MEETING. Melbourne, Nov. o. There was splendid weather and good attendance for Cup Day. Following are the results of chief events Kensington Stakes. —The Elder 1, Winoch 2, Master Tom 3. MELBOURNE CUP. Xewhaven ... ... ... 1 Bloodshot ... ... ... 2 The .Skipper ... 8 llesolute ... 4 Preston. Hopscotch, Disfigured, Devon, Marusa, Merry Boy, Dreamland, Broken Hill, Miraeulmn, Canoona, Pivot, Nada, Charge, Chavalier, Coil, Trentham, Tire. Dunhallow, Damien, Reka, and Rosella also started. Betting—4 to 1 Xewhaven, 33 to 1 Bloodshot. When the word was given Broken Hill, Preston, Dreamland, and Chevalier were the first to break the line, but coming on to the course proper the order was changed somewhat, Damien taking up the running with The Chevalier, Dreamland, and Xewhaven in that order. However, before passing the stand on the first time round the favorite was taken to the front, and after that there is little left to describe, as he was never again headed. As the held was racing up the riverside Xewhaven had three lengths'lead of Canoona, after whom came Resolute, Dreamland, Preston, Damien, Devon., and Xada. As the bridge was left behind Resolute ran up into second position. The favorite was still sailing along in front, and passed the scraping sheds five lengths ahead of Resolute, Trentliam being third. Approaching the home turn Xewhaven drew further away, and must have been a dozen lengths to the good. Racing down the straight Xewhaven held his advantage, and won easily by six lengths from Bloodshot, who was two lengths and a half in front of The Skipper, Resolute another threequarters of a length away fourth. Time. 3min 284 sec, which is a quarter ot a second behind Carbine s record time in 1890, and equal to Dunlop's in 1887. Nursery Handicap.—Hypnotist. 1 ; Hymettus, 2; Fleet Admiral, 3. Won by threequarters of a length, 'lime, lmin 3Jsec. Yan Yean Stakes. —Merman, 1 ; Cinderellen, 2: Pilatus, 3. Won by half a head. Time, lmin 42sec. Later. The attendance at the Cup was the best since the Exhibition year, being estimated at 70,000. Newhaven's dual victory has given the ring the hardest kuock received
for many years. It is reckoned that the sum of .£IOO,OOO will be paid away over the colt by bookmakers. No easier win has been witnessed since Haricot bolted in 1874. Newhaven is only the second chestnut who iias won the Cup. Hopscotch stumbled half a mile from home and badly interfered with The Skipper. Mr Stead's theory that Bloodshot was a non-stayer is exploded, as the last six furlongs of the Cup were run in lmin 18sec.
Sabretache has been scratched for all engagements. Thunder Queen, Princess of Wales, Constant, and Moonlyong are left in the Oaks Stakes which will be run to-morrow.
THE MELBOURNE CUP. [By Telegraph.] [Spjjcial to Standard. J Melbourne, This day. Newhaven's win way proclaimed by the united voices of the crowd. It is estimated that between 60,000 and 70,000 people wero present. A wild scene of the excitement was witnessed and the prolonged outbursts of delirious cheering as the favoriie passed the winning post has seldom been surpassed. It was a long time before the seething excitement subsided. The most excited admirers followed up the winner to the birdcage and relieved him of 110 small portion of his tail; but they were cautioned or they might have taken the lot. Newliaven's weight was looked upon as an almost impossibility for a three-year-old to carry to \ ictor.v, and no other horse of that ago ever carried the same amount to the winning post in a Melbourne Cup. Yet Newhaven practically made all his own running and won hands dawn in a canter. No such performance has ever been witnessed in Australia and the turf history of the world would have to be searched to produce a parallel dual victory. The ring has been struck as it has rarely been struck before : nothing in the race would have suited the large army of backers so well as Newhaven did. He was, bar Wallace, the best backed horse in the Cup and was coupled with Cremorne ill the Caullield Cup, and the two Newhavens for the Derby and Cup was double backed for all money available. Twenty-live starters lined up to the machine. Hopscotch and .Dreamland were on the inside. The centre division included Tire, Newhaven, lieka, Bloodshot, Broken Hill, Duhallow. On the extreme outside were Marusa, Disfigured, and liesolutc. As the barrier rose Resolute was the first to get on his feet, but Duhallow, Canoona, Danien, Bloodshot. Dreamland, and Preston were nearly as quickly olt" the mark. Newhaven got fairly well away, but Hopscotch, The Skipper, and Mevrv Boy began slowly, Miraeulum being the last to move. On entering the course proper the the front division consisted of Dreamland, Preston, Devon, Chevalier, Newhaven, Charge, Canoona, Resolute, and Duhallow, with Trentham, liosella, and Marusa next, Disfigured running wide on the outside, and Muraeulum still last. Opposite the carriage paddock Newhaven shot through and jumped away in front and raced past the judge's box with three lengths' lead from Canoona. Leaving the straight Newhaven gained another length's advantage. Kesolute then made a determined effort to have a cut at the leader, but Newhaven. galloping like a piece of machinery, raced past the mile post four lengths ahead of him, Canoona running third, with Dreamland, Charge, Preston, and Devon close up. At the bridge Dreamland ran up level with Kesolute, and Devon passed Canoona, next to whom came Preston. Charge, Marusa, and Pivot. The Skipper and Bloodshot were in the ruck and Disfigured and Miraeulum were already beaten. Making toward the abattoirs Newhaven lengthened his stride without an apparent effort and increased his lead to six lengths from Kesolute. Trentham now made a brilliant run, joining his stable companion, and the pair raced after the leader a length and a half clear of Dreamland, while scarcely a length away the colors of Bloodshot. The Skipper, Devon. Damien, lieka and Preston became blended strugglinginacrowded mass, through which Marusa. Hopscotch and Broken Hill were battling to find openings. Newliavcn here suddenly spread himself out to the full extent," and leaving his horses as though thev had stopped, dashed past the abattoirs with a lead of fully ten lengths. Realising that the time had come for a supreme effort, Collenan struck Kesolute with the spurs, and the colt responded generously. Trentham still hung on to his girths and a. length from them could he seen i'reamland rapidly tiring, Damien. Bloodshot, The Skipper, and lteka, who was going well not half done with, while Hopscotch, Marusa, Broken Hill, and Chevalier were buried in the ruck, and rapidly becoming demoralised. Opening up the bend Newhaven, who was not anything like extended, drew out and raced past the halfmile post ten or twelve lengths clear of the hopelessly beaten field, which was headed by Kesolute and Trentham, who were growing weary, and Devon and Damien. who shortly afterwards gave place to The Skipper, Bloodshot, and lteka. When half way round the bend Kesolute made a desperate effort to catch the leader, closely followed by lieka, Devon, and Damien. the latter two showing signs of distress. The favorite entered the straight with the question settled, but the leading lot succeeded in getting on closer terms. Amid enthusiastic applause Newhaven galloped home an easy winner by seven lengths, without receiving the whip or spur. Bloodshot cut down the gallant Kesolute before reaching the distance, and The Skipper coming on gamely fought out a desperate race for second place with Bloodshot, the latter staying the longest secured the verdict by two lengths and a half. Kesolute was a length off fourth, closely followed by lieka, Damien, Duhallow. Broken Hill, Dreamland, Devon, Tire. Nada. Chevalier, Trenthaul, Hopscotch, and Kosella. while last of the lot were Disfigured. Canoona. Pivot, and Miraeulum. The surprise of the race was the gallant finish of lieka, who was galloping faster than any of the placed horses at the finish. Gardiner, who was determined not to throw anv chance away, said he never saw a flash of silk after he took the favorite to the front, and never once had he to-.eall upon the colt to race. Collenan had a hard ride on Kesolute, and he handled the eolt well. Hopscotch and The Skipper had bad luck at the back of the course, but nothing except a fall could have affected the result. It is the intention of the owners to send Newhaven to England, where, if he retains his form, it is expected he will give a good account of himself.
