[BY Givsy GKAND.] NEWHAVEN. Newhaven was bred at St Albans by Mr W. li. Wilson, and sold as a yearling to Mr J. Wilson, jm\, for 120gs. After a couple of defeats when not. quoted Newhaven started first favorite for the Nursery Handicap at tlie Caulfield meeting hist year, and won easily from Coil. Newhaven then won the Maribyrnong Plate from C'oil, lnU he failed by a short neck from Kobold in the Normanby Stakes. Ho reversed things at Geclong bv winning the Produce Stakes. In the Oakleigh Plate he ran third to Coil and Maluma. At Flemington lie easily won the Ascotvale Stakes. Then came a defeat by Hova in the All-Aged Stakes. Before he was beaten by Coil at llandwick Newhaven had been sold for 2,000g5. In the Spring Stakes he I'eversed this form most completely, and retired into winter quarters the undoubted two-year-old champion of the season. He opened his three-year-old career by annexing two races at the A-T.C Spring meeting. He suffered defeat at the hands of The Officer in the Caulfield Guineas. Newhaven made amends on Saturday last by easily winning the ]>erby. He is a starter in the Melbourne Cup to-day and many are of the opinion that the chestnut son of Newminister and Oceana will occupy a prominent position at the finish. Newhaven is trained by Walter Hickenbotbem, who, it will be remembered, was associated with Carbine's career in Australia. Newhaven is described as being one of the finest gallopers ever seen in the colonies.
