A Carious Infernal Machine.

Information ha-; leaked out of an attempted outrage in jiinningham, and th.at an accident, alone prevented serious loss of life and immense damage; to property. Messrs Avery, the wellknown scalemakers of Pepbeth, recentlv received a box measuring about eight inches square. When the lid was removed the establishment was startled to lind that the box contained what appeared to he an infernal machine. The bomb, which was made of metal, was tilled with a powerful explosive. It, was ingeniou-dy arranged, hut in an endeavor to secure the success of his scheme the perpetrator fortunately frustrated it. The lid of the box was so arranged that the process of opening it would release a hammer. The bomb was fitted with a small nipple on which was a percussion cap. The hammer 0:1 h ing set free was so situated as to fall on the percussion cap and fire the mass of explosive material. In order to prevent the cap falling oit during transit the author of the outrage had fastened it to the nipple. It was 111 i s little provision that upset the diabolical calculations of the miscreant. I'p to the present no clue has been obtained as to rhcMatter. it is supposed that the attempted outrage was prompt'd by a feeling of revenge.
