The Dunlop Tyre.
Most ,-in> lij-f>l :;tl>ly unaware says Knsrineerini,'. that Mr Dunlopwas anficipaf< d in his invention of tho pneumatic tyre by a Mr William Thomson. who took out a patent for the il. vie ■ about 1*1(5. The curious thing an«l one which is k-ss jrewrally known, ■ i- that the invention was very ■ thoroughly tested, ami shown to have great advantages, so far as the reduction of tractive resistance is concerned, ov< r tlio tyres ordinarily in use. In I*l7 a number of experiments concln- ivtly showed the .superiority of the pii"umatic system. It was also demonstrated that the wheels stood wear very weil, as the c;-.r with which the tests were carried cut hail been driven more than 1200 miles over every kind of road. The wheels had an inner tube of soft rubber. and an outer one of leather to take the wear: but in 1K49 the leather was ienlaced by rubber, which was • ihicktned on the treacl, giving a tyre
;ipparentlv identical in all essentials v.: 1 !: tho;e i;i use to day. Il is most ivnis-.rkat'ule that an invention so thoroughly tested, ami shown to have such advantages as this, should have 1»e:i allowed to lie absolutely dormant for so manv wars.
