NAPIER NOTES.

[From Our Own Correspondent.]

Napier, October 20,

The house destroyed at West Clive on Sunday was occupied by Mr Gordene, not Jourdine. The insurances were £2OO on the building in the North German office and £75 on the furniture and stock in the South British. The house and shop (six rooms) were completely demolished. At the bowling green on Saturday a team picked by Mr J. G. Parker, beat a, team selected by Mr J. 11. Dean. Tournaments between the Napier, liluff Hill, and Hastings bowlers will be commenced next Saturday.

Half-a-dozen Clive residents were fined various sums for allowing stock to wander by the S.M. yesterday

morning. The blockage of the water pipes t>y the dynamite explosion mentioned in a previous letter is causing serious inconvenience to some of the people in the town, as the water procurable is of a muddy character. One pipe was cleared on Saturday and a beautiful flow of clean water came up for a time but it soon became blocked. The Borough Council is considering the advisability of putting down fresh pipes. Mr Carnell, M.H.R., returned home by last night's express. He looks a little weary after the long sittings of the latter part of the session, but anticipates that a few days spent in the serence climate of Napier free from the cares and worries of legislation will restore him to his erstwhile vigor. Messrs Dinwidclie and Knowles have left on their annual picnic jaunt to Auckland at the expense of the contributing papers to confirm the report and balance-sheet prepared by Mr Atack, the manager of the Press Association. Feeling reference will no doubt be made at the meeting to the scandalous and shameful conduct to the Hastings Standard, which absolutely refused to put its neck under the heel of that historical personage, the president, Mr E. W. Knowles. The Defence Department has notified the local F Battery that the question of providing them with new and more modern guns has been held over pending the arrival of the new commandant Major Pole-Ponton. At a meeting of the Napier Swimming Club last night, 20 new members were elected including three ladies. Mr Montague Lascclles has been appointed Returning Officer for the Napier electorate.
