NAPIER NOTES.

[From Our Own Correspondent.]

Napier, October 19

The strikers resumed work at the breakwater this morning. The weather is fine and work at the structure is to be pushed on vigorously. A good muster of the Wanderers' Bicycle Club pedalled out to Farndon Park on Saturday. A high wind spoiled the enjoyment of the ride somewhat however. The club will run out to C'rissoge next Saturday to witness the shearing. Mrs Burton, a very old resident of Napier, and wife of the curator of the botanical gardens, died yesterday, aged 74. The Pollards concluded their Napier season by a performance of " Olivette" on Saturday night. They proceeded to Wanganui by express train to-day, and after playing there will go on to Timaru and thence to Christchurch where they will perform during Cup week. Their Napier season was very satisfactory financially. At Napier Park on Saturday the polo season was opened by a match between Mr John Bennett and his three sons against Messrs Hughes, Dolbel, Hutchison, and H. Peacock, who were easily beaten. A scratch game was afterwards played but poor form was shown owing to the want of condition in the ponies. At the inquest on the body of the cabman, H. Rogers, who died suddenly on Saturday morning, a verdict of death from natural causes was returned. The medical evidence was that the aortic valves of the heart were diseased. The cricket season was opened on Saturday by a match being played between the Waiapu and United teams in which the latter made 126 runs and the former 56 for 6 wickets.
