THE MASTERS REFUSE A CONFERENCE. Melboukxk, This day. The steamship owners have refused the request of the Seamen's Union for a conference with regard to an increase in wages, hut are prepared to meet the representatives of crews and hear their arguments. The seamen desire that the present rates be increased to £8 and £6 a month, and this demand is being made all over the colony. It is stated that great briskness exists in the shipping trade, and that there is great difficulty in obtaining seamen, more especially in Sydney.
