NAPIER NOTES.
[From Ock Owx Correspondent.]
Napikk, October 15. The City Band intends to commemorate the anniversary of the battle of Trafalgar by playing a programme of music in Give Square on the Ist November. The Hawke's Day Lawn Tennis Club will open its courts for the season next Saturday. Mr Saunders, contractor for the breakwater works, is advertising in this morning's Herald for good navvies at 8s a day so that the strike may practically be considered to be "off." Teams of the Rival and Scinde Cricket Clubs played a match on the Recreation Ground yesterday, the latter winning by 1* runs. The following team will represent the Scinde Cricket Club in their opening cup match against the County Club at Hastings on Saturday : —P. Ashcroft, F. Fulton, J. C'. Martin, G. A. Martin, -J. Gardner, J. Hawke, S. White, B. Cooper, K. Cameron, H. Searchiield, 11. Bull, T. B. Bear, H. \Y. Frost, B. Williams, and A. King ; emergencies, G. Flint, H. Bear, and J. Lynam. The Trinty Church Sunday School celebrated their anniversary with a soiree last evening. Among the speakers was Mrs Smalley of Masterton, an able and earnest speaker. Mr Briuyiere, a local railway guard, who has been promoted to Wanganui, has been presented by his fellow employees with a silver mounted pipe and silver matchbox. The Inspector's report on the Napier schools can hardly be regarded as satisfactory. In the main school Mr Hill states that grammar is good and improving : standard \ I. is poor and much below fair standard. History is good throughout lower standards; standard VI. shows signs of weakness. Mental arithmetic should be strengthened : a better acquaintance with the tables and their application desirable ; geography is very good : comprehension of language of reading leslbns has much improved, and needlework is well taught. Sound progress made during the year. The report on the work at the Has tings-street school is generally favorable ; drill needs attention; arithmetic requires increased attention ; discipline imperfect. Mr C. J. Kennedy, the well-known local solicitor, has been appointed " chief consul" for Napier in connection with the Neyv Zealand Cyclists Touring Club. The Government offices were closed yesterday in commemoration of Labor Pay, but no demonstration of any kind took place in connection therewith*
