Whittington; Clerk of the Totalisators : G. T. Cross ; Handicapper: J. E. Henry; Secretary: F. D. Luekie. The following are the results after we went to press yesterday : Corinthian Stakes. Hon -J. D. Ormond's Mars lOst 71b (Mr J. Ormond) ... ... 1 Mr G. Murray-Aynsley's Salvo,! Ist (Mr B. Cowper) ... ... 2 Mr G. P. Donnelly's Haeata, list (Mr L. Shaw) 8 Rainbow, Queensborough, The Brook, Blackberry and Herald also ran. The flag went down to a good start. Salvo immediately went to the front followed by Haeata and Mars. At the back stretch The Brook went up to the front but could not hold her position long. Coming into the straight Salvo looked all over a winner, but Mars came at him and got home rather easily by three lengths. Total., £640 ; £175 on winner. Div., L 3 Bs. Time, 2min 25 1-oth sees. Flying Handicap. C. Siddell's Moonraker, 7st 121b (Wright) 1 S. 11. Gollan's The Possible, 9st (Lindsay) 2 •T. Davis' Acone, 9st2lb (Gallagher) 3 Solitaire, Flying Shot., Rip Van Winkle, Orion's Belt, New Forest, Waiau, Kingsman, and Sheet Lightning also started. A splendid start was made. The Possible led the way round the bend, with Rip and Flying Shot. Positions were unchanged until coming into the straight when Moonraker ceme like a shot out of a gun, and a tremendous race resulted in a win for the son of The Assyrian by a neck. Total., LGIS, L7B on winner. Div., L 7 Bs.
SECOND DAY. BEAUTIFUL WEATHER AND LARGE ATTENDANCE. The morning broke fine and fastings, putting on her holiday attire, wended her way to the course in hundreds. The arrivals by train were more numerous than yesterday and the attendance was much larger. The ladies wore there in force, and some very pratty costumes graced the lawn. His Excellency the Governor and suite ! were present. The City Band again discoursed sweet music. The course was rather heavy, but the racing was good and the fields large. For the opening event, the Trial Handicap, twelve faced the starter, Mr Piper getting them away well together in front of the stand. The race was a one horse one, Primula coming away when asked and winning by six or seven lengths. Only four saddled up for the Maiden Hurdles, for which Hilda II was installed favorite. Waitangi made the running, but Prairie Grass was handy throughout and passed the judge's box first. The field for the Spring Handicap paraded on the lawn, Day Star being at once made a firm favorite. A tremendous race up the straight between Lotion and the Auckland colt resulted in a win for the latter. The win was immensly popular, and Day Star's chances in the Now Zealand Cup may now be considered the rosiest. Four youngsters trotted out for the Nursery, Defiant winning rather easily from St. Conon. The first protest of the meeting was made on the ground of crossing. The following are the results : —■ Trial Handicap, of 40 sovs; second horse to receive 5 sovs from the stake. For horses that have never won a race exceeding 40 sovs at time of starting. Once round. Mr J. Maher's Primula, Bst (Watts) 1 Mr H. Peters' Bona Fide, Bst 101b (McGrath) 2 Mr Ruputia te Hianga's Aphony, Bst 91b (Whittaker) 3 Also started, Gold Cup, Belligerent, Maid Marion, Douglas, First Blood, Target, Nikolo, Lorenzo, and Sheet Lightning. Sylvanus, Popgun, Barshot, and Wikitoria were scratched. Mr Piper had a little trouble to let them off, and when the word was given Aphony was the last to move. I3ona Fide and Maid Marion were the first to break the line, and led round the back stretch, when Sheet Lightning went to the fore and led the field by three lengths till rounding the turn when Primula put in her claim and won easily by four lengths. Totalisator, £644 ; on winner, £154. Div., £3 15s. Time, 2min lsec. Maiden Hurdles, of 50 sovs; second horse to receive 10 sovs from the stake. For horses that have never wdii a hurdle race of 40 sovs at time of nomination. About one mile and a half. Mr J. Rollo's Prairie Grass, 9st 13lb (Rollo) 1 Mr A. Woods' Waitang, 9st (Graham) ... ... ... ... 2 Mr T. H. Lowry's Joker, 9st (Stone) 3 Also started Hilda 11. Repo was scratched. From a good start the colors of Waitangi were the first to show in front followed by Hilda, Joker, and Prairie Grass. The field closed up and jumped the hurdle in front of the stand in a bunch. • Rounding into the back stretch Waitangi and Hilda were racing in front, with Prairie Grass six lengths in the rear. As the field drew near the last hurdle Prairie Grass began to move forward, and once in the straight never left the race in doubt, winning easily by two lengths. Totalisator, £464 ; on winner, £93. Spring Handicap, of 225 sovs; second horse to receive 15 sovs, and the third horse 10 sovs from the stake. One mile and a half. Mr T. Morrin's Day Star, 7st 71b (Gallagher) 1 Mr R. Connop's Lotion, Bst (McTaggart) 2 Mr S. H. Gollan's The Possible, Bst 91b (Lindsay) ... ... 3 Also started : Bonnie Scotland, The Shrew, Pom Pom, Eainbow, Flaneur, New Forest, Trentalto, and Coeur de Lion. Acone, Orion's Belt, Rip Van Winkle, and Armilla were scratched. A splendid start was effected, and the field rounded into the straight in a bunch. Passing the stand the first time the order was Flaneur, The Shrew, and Trentalto, with Day Star and The Possible in the rear. Going down the back stretch Flaneur led the field by six lengths, followed by Pom Pom and Trentalto. Rounding into the straight Lotion had command, but the colors of Day Star could be seen coming fast on the inside. A great race between the two first horses ensued all the way up the straight, the Castor colt gaining the verdict by a neck, The Possible three lengths away third with The Shrew last. Totalisator, £1180; on winner, £523. Div., £2. Time, 2min 48 2-osecs. Nursery Handicap, of 75 sovs; second horse to receive 10 sovs from the stake. Four furlongs and a half, lion -J. D. Ormond's Defiant, Bst olb (Moore) .... ... ... 1 Mr T. H. Lowry's St Conon, Bst 51b (Whittaker) 2 Mr G. Hunter's Girofla, Bst (Derrett) .. 3 Alionora also started. The field were let go in a bunch, and shortly afterwards Girofla almost fell, but Derrett managed to keep the Trenton mare on her legs. Defiant won easily. A protest was entered by Derrett on the grounds of crossing. Moore, the rider of Defiant, was disqualified for one month. Div., £1 10s. Second Handicap Hurdles, of 75 sovs; second horse to receive 10 sovs from the stake. About one mile and a half. Mr R. Connop's Tally-ho, lOst 61b (Mitchell) 1 Hon. J. D. Ormond's Midas, 9st 2 Mr C.
