LOCAL AND GENERAL.
A public dance is announced to be held in the Oddfellow's Ilall on to-morrow niglit at 8 o'clock. Mi" l'itt announces having received a large shipment of Island fruit, which he retails at reasonable prices. In response to a requisition with 800 signatures the Hon Mr Ilolleston lias consented to be nominated for the liiccarton seat. Lady Glasgow accompanied by Lady Alice Boyle and Captain Preston returned to Wellington by the express to-day. Lady Glasgow has been slightly indisposed. The streets last night were thronged with moving masses of people and though here and there amongst the crowd a drunk or two performed yet there was a general order and sobriety exhibited which speaks well for the sobriety of the colonial. Thompson Bros, once more, have their steam riding gallery in full swing. Crowds of happy children and adults assemble every evening, and the fun is fast and furious while it lasts. Messrs Thompson Bros, last season some months ago was, owing to the rain, not so successful as might be desired, but the firm are now enjoying a prosperous run. The very latest application of the Piontgen liays in lighting up the interior of the human frame for the purposes of medical investigations. The patient .simply swallows a pill charged with llontgen Bays and the inviolable secrets of his stomach arc laid bare to the vulgar gaze. The strides of latter day science threaten to invade the very sancity of our bedchambers. At the S. M. Court this morning, before George Ellis, Esq., J.P., a disreputable looking young man giving the name of John Palmer, alias .Tones, ws charged with stealing a revolver, the property of some person unknown. Detective Chrystal deposed to seeing accused in possession of a valuable revolver, and on making enquiries accused made such unsatisfactory statements that he arrested him on the charge of theft. On the application of Sergeant Mitchell the prisoner was remanded for eight days to Napier. The same individual was further charged with using filthy and indecent language in the public streets last night. Detective Chrystal sworn, said upon his arresting the accused on the first charge the foul language complained of was made use of. Constable Jioutledge corroborated this evidence, and the prisoner was sentenced to three months' hard labor.—John M'Donald was charged with damaging an umbrella the property of Detective Chrystal, and with using indecent language in a public thoroughfare. Detective Chrystal proved the charge of using indecent language, and the accused was sentenced to three months' imprisonment with hard labor. The Bench dismissed the charge of breaking the umbrella, as the evidence did not prove malice.—J. F. Peters was charged with making false representations to H. B. Limbrick with the view of obtaining board and lodging, and was remanded to Waipawa.
